How to Submit Stories to Places like Elephant Journal

Learn how to share your work with thousands of readers.

Have you been dreaming of the day when you will be able to share your work with hundreds or thousands of readers from all over the world? Have you been thinking of online platforms that support individual writers and also, take in quality work?

At Golden Brick Road, we know it’s important to build up your writing portfolio and one way to do that is to submit your work to places like Elephant Journal, Mind Body Green, Rebelle Society, Huffington Post, Poetry Magazine, and many more. It is important to know what they are looking for and what types of articles they like to pick up.

Specifically, when it comes to Elephant Journal they like real stories that come straight from the heart. Super vulnerable shares spoken from the reader’s perspective are a must. They like solid and well sourced information that will provide value to their readers and give them something to think about or something to talk about. Using titles like, “A letter to my 20 year old self,” “How to Love a Woman,” or “5 Steps to Help You Grow Spiritually” can be useful to have your piece recognized from the piles of emails they receive.

The goal with many of these online platforms is to avoid using the word “you.” No one wants to be told what to do. They want to know why you feel that way based on your life experience. Even at GBR we coach our authors to write in the first person (I) or the inclusive voice, (we). You is rarely part of our vocabulary unless we are saying, “You are an awesome writer!”

One of the best pieces of encouragement I can give to anyone who would like to be a featured writer is to be bold and courageous. Take a stand for what you believe in and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

Sending you lots of love and beautiful words,

Cassie Jeans
